Interview with the artist - Bonnie from The FamiLee Jewels

By N Valentine Studio

Featured Artist - Bonnie Lee of The FamiLee Jewels, Saratoga Springs, NY

The FamiLee Jewels is a great steampunk shop! A family affair, the talent in this shop is endless, wood working, painting, jewelry design, the list goes on and on. Well worth a stop to see the amazing pieces. My personal favorite is the copper wrapped beach coral necklace. I love coral, the textures are so entrancing and the shiny smooth copper wire is a great contrast!

How long have you been working in your medium?
I have been making jewelry for 5 years, selling it for 3.

What drew you to this medium?
A spur of the moment jewelry class to fill up a cold winter night. Since then it has been madness.

What is your favorite thing about your art?
Reusing bits and pieces of the past in ways not related to their original purpose. Finding the bits gives me as much joy as making the pieces.

What's your favorite piece?
A dragonfly pendant. I wear it at least once a week. It is antiqued brass and uses a vintage cabinet pull as the base.

What's the hardest piece you've ever made?
An intricately wire wrapped slice of agate pendant with chain maille necklace.

What's the one favorite tool you cannot live without?
My Dremel.

What's your favorite thing about your workspace or studio?
That it is my room. I don't have to share it with anyone or use it for any other purpose.

What is your other craft?
In addition to making jewelry I also do decorative painting. I have a second Etsy store that sells these items, Feather The Nest.

Who or what inspires you?
Eni Oken, Preston Reuther, Sharilyn Miller, Tim McCreight, Margos Junkin Journal, Silver Fox Salvage.

What's your favorite inspirational saying?
When you come to the edge of all that you've known and are about to step into darkness one of two things will happen. Either there will be something solid for you to stand on, or you will be taught to fly.

What's one thing you've never done you always wanted to do?
Visit Stonehenge.
