Featured artist - Meredith Hilt from Meredith Hilt Designs, Bluemont, VA
Meredith's pieces are unique and often make me wonder, how did she do that. Combining metals can tricky, yet Meredith does it with flair and creativity. My favorite piece of her is her Double Horse Head pendant.
Meredith is a talented metalsmith, read below to find out some insights into her wonderful work.
What is your other craft?
Oh, where do I start?? I also paint, sculpt, design puppetry, ceramics, collage, pastel, crochet, knit, garden ...
How long have you been working in your medium?
I've been making jewelry for about 3 years.
What drew you to this medium?
I've always adored jewelry - especially sterling silver. I started with beading and found I could purchase silver. It took off from there.
What is your favorite thing about your art?
Being able to wear my creations - and collect the compliments!
What's your favorite piece?
While not my best piece, my favorite is a horse head I did in scrimshaw (with old piano key ivory) and mounted in a silver setting.
What's the hardest piece you've ever made?
I find making commission pieces the most difficult. There's something about having to make something for someone in particular. Most items I make, I make to please myself - if someone falls in love with it, all the better. With commission work you have to design, hoping to please one individual.
What's the one favorite tool you cannot live without?
Ooo, that's a tough question. I think I'm torn between my simple, every day round nose pliers and my acetylene torch.
What's your favorite thing about your workspace or studio?
Being able to zone the world out by putting on my ear buds, listen to a good audio book, and play with my metal and super cool tool-toys.
Who or what inspires you?
As a painter I'm often stymied by my muse - but I'm constantly looking at things and seeing jewelry pieces. I recently saw an odd pattern in a carpet that inspired me to run home and make an animal pin!
What's your favorite inspirational saying?
"You can and should shape your own future. If you don't, something else will."
What's one thing you've never done you always wanted to do?
I really would like to try my hand at iron work; large scale blacksmithing!
