Lapis Lazuli

Lapis has been used since before the beginning of history. Afghanistan is one of the oldest known sources of this beautiful blue stone and continues to yield some of the best material in the world.

This is a Mesopotamian pendant from about 2900 BC.

Lapis is a rock composed mostly of the minerals lazurite (blue), calcite (white), sodalite (blue) and pyrite (gold). Synthetics do exist, but they're fairly uncommon.

Since lapis is often found in large pieces, it lends itself well to sculpture.

And now, for your drooling pleasure, some selections from our talented and wonderful Starving Artists:

TwoChicksToo made these

From Colla's talented hands

RioRita's lovely earrings
